What exactly is the Wánniánlì?

The Wánniánlì (萬年曆) is the Chinese term for a Perpetual calendar or Calendar of the 10,000 years. This calendar is constructed in such a way that it provides the correct date for a very long period of time, often several centuries. This means that the calendar is based on a mathematical calculation that takes into account the Gregorian or traditional Chinese lunar calendar.

In practice, the Wánniànlì is a calendar representation that contains further information such as days of the week, element constellations, lunar stations and other details in addition to the date. In China and other East Asian cultures in particular, the Wánniànlì is also used to determine important festivals such as the Lunar New Year, the Dragon Boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The term "Wánniàn" means "ten thousand years", which symbolically stands for a very long period of time. In ancient times, it was a useful tool for the management of agricultural and religious events, as well as for the organization of festivals and ceremonies and the evaluation of days.

What is a Tóng Shū?

The Tóng Shū (通書), also known as Chinese Almanac or Tongshu calendaris a traditional Chinese calendar that not only shows common dates and holidays, but also contains astrological, medical, geomantic (feng shui) and other important cultural and spiritual information. The Tóng Shū has been used for centuries in China and is an important source for daily life to make decisions based on the principles of Chinese astrology and time calculation.

Main functions of the Tóng Shū:

  1. Daily wisdom and predictions: The Tóng Shū gives indications of favorable and unfavorable days for various activities, such as weddings, relocations, construction work, business, but also for medical treatments. This is based on Chinese astrology, the five elements and the cycle of celestial stems and earth branches.
  2. Lunar calendar: The calendar includes detailed information about the phases of the moon, including important holidays such as the Lunar New Year (Chinese New Year) and other traditional festivals.
  3. Feng Shui and geomantic consulting: The Tóng Shū also contains indications of favorable and unfavorable orientations of houses or graves and gives recommendations for the placement of objects in accordance with the principles of Feng Shui.
  4. Climatological forecasts: It provides information based on the sign of the zodiac and the 10 sky trunks and 12 earth brancheswhich are used in Chinese divination and forecasting techniques. You can deduce from the indications whether a particular day is particularly favorable or unfavorable for certain actions.

Historical significance

The Tóng Shū was historically a widely used tool, especially among scholars, officials and merchants. In the past, there were special Almanac printswhich were customized for different regions or even for individual dynasties. In some cases, the almanac was also linked to the imperial court and was published by it.

The "Modern Tóng Shū"

Nowadays, modern versions of the Tóng Shū exist as printed books or digital formats that provide similar information. They are particularly popular in East Asia, but are still used by people interested in traditional Chinese practices. They are also important for Traditional Chinese Science techniques such as Geomancy - Feng Shui and divination and prediction techniques.
